Me and my friend were talking about mermaids one day and came up with a bunch of headcanons about them, and sort of ended up making our own race of mer. 

But we basically came up with that ours are based off of Homestuck a bit (I'm into that now, thanks to said friend). The color of your tail dictates your class, based on a spectrum similar to the hemospectrum, with bright red being at low class and fuschia at high. Blood color is red for everyone. The low classes also have more human shaped ears, and higher classes have longer elf-shaped ears. Some have webbed fingers and extra sharp teeth, all have gills on each side of their face and longer finger nails than humans. Males, based on this have their "wing wangs" (as quoted by my friend) tucked in their body until they get "excited" as human males do and dong expands, which then they can begin the reproduction phase with a female. We're still not really sure if the mers lay eggs or actually have babies like humans yet though. But really, how would a female go about live-birth?

Males also have longer but less decorative tails than females. Females have shorter ones, but theirs are much more vibrant and stuff. Females are superior in the society; they are ruled by an Empress. Females do the courting in male x female relationships.

Anyways, upper classmer as a society tend to want to breed selectively, to "keep their good genes" and carry on their class, so they often want high class mer to mate with other high classes, in the form of arranged marriages and such. And thats exactly what they do. Ordered by the Empress, females are selected to breed with certain males in their class in order to preserve good traits and potentially create high-class mers. The female in the family(s) is notified with whom they are supposed to marry, and then must meet with their fiance(e) to carry out the relationship.

I really wanted to draw this though, because its been what seems like ages since I drew my last mermaid, and I knew I could do so much better than that old one.

I haven't made up a name for this one yet, but the only thing I know is that he's gay, and middle class, but closer to higher than  lower. If anyone would like to casually rp with me about these mers, maybe comment and then send me a note?

So far I have that he was born to an upper-class mother and a middle-class, Teal-tailed father. His mother wanted an upper-class child, however he turned out to be middle-class.  In the beginning, she was only slightly dissapointed, her love for her child exceeded her previous expectations. After a few years, 5 to be exact, she disowned Taron and his father and threw them out of her house because she realized her son was never going to be good enough for her. His father moved them to the middle-class district, where they now live together, though Taron longs to go back to the upper-class district. Since he has an affinity for male mer, he hopes that someday he'll marry a high-class one.
